Book Review of

"Bees Besieged "

Bees Besieged by Bill Mares should be required reading for all beekeepers. It is an informative look into the entire beekeeping industry from commercial operations to small backyard beekeepers, from honey packers to niche marketing. All is recounted in an unbiased tone, giving the reader a unique look into the industry from the other person's shoes.

The only problem with this book is its poor cover design and cryptic title, which unfortunately mislead most readers into believing the book is about some road trip across middle America. Do not let the bland cover deter you from adding such an important work to your library. Bill Mares tells it like it is, with humor, with truth and with dignity. He brings the bees and the beekeepers to life, letting the latter speak in their own voices.

Each page is packed with punch. Bill Mares is very economical with his words, and so does not waste the reader's time. As he struggles to discover what brought about the downfall of his own five hives, he uncovers the myriad problems besieging bees and the beekeeping industry. He tackles much larger problems such as the need for pollination, the effects of global trade, and the politics of zoning. But he does so in a manner that relates to both the large commercial beekeeper and the small hobbyist.

If you are only going to read one book this year, make it this one! It is well worth the effort and the bees will thank you for it.
