Starting Out Right

Sunday April 28th, 2019
10 am – 2 pm

A 4 hour field class, designed for new beekeepers. We will show you the basics of how to light a smoker, how to work a hive, how to recognize the different types of brood. We will show you how to install a nuc and care for your bees. You will need a smoker and protective veil to participate in this class.

This course teaches you the basics and helps you feel comfortable working a hive:
  • How to prepare to go into the apiary
  • How to work a hive
  • How to install a nuc into your own equipment

Spring Management

Sunday May 12th, 2019
10 am – 2 pm

A 4 hour field class, detailing spring hive management. We will demonstrate how to quickly inspect a colony for swarming, the best way to super for a honey flow, and how to use a queen excluder. Depending on how the season is progressing, we will show typical management like reversing, making a split and possibly a shook swarm.

This course teaches you spring hive management
  • How to control swarming in your apiary
  • How to use a queen excluder for a clean honey harvest
  • How to make a split in a single apiary

May & June Queen Catches

Weekend Queen Rearing Class

Saturday-Sunday, July 13th & 14th, 2019
10 am – 4 pm, each day
Limited to 12 participants

This weekend course will show you how to rear your own queens. We will show you how to set up a queen rearing starter and finisher, as well as a single colony set-up. We will install queen cells and check on developing cells. Every participant will have a chance to graft their own cell bar and we will check acceptance the following day. Lots of hands on guidance and a chance to have all your queen rearing questions answered. Course includes a guide book and a grafting kit, which includes a cell bar frame, a grafting tool and cell cups.

This course walks you through the essentials of queen rearing, teaching you to:

  • Set up a swarm box starter & a cell finisher
  • Set up a all-in-one starter & finisher
  • How to install queen cells
  • How to graft
  • Allow you to graft and see cell acceptance the following day
  • Provides you with a queen rearing guide book and cell grafting kit
  • Swarm boxes will be available for purchase

Winter Prep Begins Mid Summer

Sunday August 4th, 2019
10 am – 2 pm

The best time to prepare your colonies for winter is ln summer. Don’t lose colonies through beekeeper error. Learn how to make sure your colony enters the winter strong and healthy, so it winters well and builds up rapidly in the spring.

This course walks you through prepping your colonies for winter:

  • Monitor and treat for varroa mites
  • How to rear strong winter bees that can survive a long winter
  • When to combine colonies
  • How to evaluate colony strength and health
